Questions for Endocrinology — Part 2
- Give an example of feedback regulation of hormonal secretion from the several we have discussed. Illustrate how these systems are typically self-regulating through inhibitory effects.
- The testes primarily produce and release testosterone. However, by the time these individual hormone molecules act at target tissues they may actually be quite different hormones. What do I mean by this and how does this happen?
- What are the two basic forms of sex determination? Give an example of each. Now, distinguish between sex determination and sexual differentiation. How does the gene called ‘SRY’ figure into this scheme?
- If you are a mammal, you can develop as a phenotypically female individual if you have a mutation in your androgen receptor gene. What basic feature of mammalian sexual phenotype development does this illustrate? How else might such an effect arise?
- Can we just look at the chemical structure of a compound and conclude anything about its potential to interact with our endocrine system?
