Social Dominance
-both dominant AND subordinate individualsmust benefit from dominance in order for it to be an organizational force in social systems

Dominance Hierarchy (one type of social organization)

- aggression important
- family groups, dominant=parents
- larger groups, dominant= strength, size, age, history, etc.

Ranks
1) Linear
2) Triangular
 

Females:
- in separate hierarchy
- in mixed hierarchy

Young:
- rank of mother
- history
- supported vs. submit

Aging:
- maintain status
- long-term memory
 

Stress:
- mid-ranking males
- glucocorticoids: carbo reserves, decrease immune system and steroid levels

Options for Submissives:
1) emigrate
2) associate with dominant
3) leave with mate
4) wait it out

#1 most common

- unequal distribution and control over resources
- title, profession, possessions, etc.
- postures
