The Urban Structural Entomology program focuses on pests that cause nuisance problems, economic damage, and public health concerns found in and around structural, residential, and industrial settings. The program blends basic and applied research components with traditional education and extension-outreach activities about pests that affect people and the building in which they live and work. Major arthropod pest groups include cockroaches, termites, ants, fleas, and flies, along with a many other less prevalent but nonetheless important pests such as beetles, spiders, bees, wasps and silverfish. Management of commensal rodents, birds and other vertebrate "nuisance" pests is included.
