Currently there are
four active projects in the forest entomology program. We are investigating
the host/insect interactions of the balsam woolly adelgid in natural stands
and plantations of Fraser fir to determine the mechanism of host resistance.
Our Christmas tree IPM project is concerned with the development of cultural
practices, such as reduced weed control practices and the establishment
of ground cover, that will encourage both native and introduced natural
enemy populations. The hemlock woolly adelgid project is researching biological
control strategies and host resistance factors. We are also investigating
host resistance factors (resin characteristics) of southern yellow pines,
especially loblolly pines, to southern pine beetle attack.
