Program Area: Applied Insect Ecology and Pest Management

RESEARCH (50%)

Development of integrated pest management tactics (IPM) for commercial growers of peaches and small fruit.

Research and Demonstration:

Peaches

  • Ground cover management and its impact on populations of arthropd pests (especially mites and catfacing insects) and beneficials.

Blueberries

  • Epidemiology of blueberry stunt disease as vectored by sharpnosed leafhoppers.
  • Natural host plant resistance to foliar pests.
  • Classical biological control of terrapin scale using three endemic species of hymenopteran parasites.
  • Population dynamics of blueberry bud mites.

    Grapes

  • Behavior and development of grape root borers.
  • Use of synthetic sex pheromones for mass trapping or mating disruption.

    Strawberries

  • Population dynamics and control of twospotted spider mites infesting fruit grown on black plastic.

    Current Activities:

  • Screen blueberry cultivars for resistance to foliar insect pests.
  • Develop and test a new bioassay procedure for evaluating host plant resistance to blueberry bud mites.
  • Determine phenology and generations per year for parasites of terrapin scale on blueberries.
  • Continue long-term experiment to determine development time for larval stages of the grape root borer.
