Research Triangle Park is located near Durham and Chapel Hill, approximately 15 miles from Raleigh. A number of federal research institutions are located within the Park, including extensive laboratories of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences. Also within the Park are numerous industrial laboratories engaged in basic research, including the Chemical Industry Institute for Toxicology, GlaxoSmithKline, Nortel Networks, BASF, Bayer CropScience, IBM and others. Other important RTP residents include the National Office for Sigma Xi, the N.C. Biotechnology Center, and the N.C. Microelectronics Center. Many of the NCSU faculty are involved in cooperative work with various members of these agencies.
