Program Area: Systematics

RESEARCH (89%)

Research is aimed at inferring phylogenetic relationships in the order Diptera primarily from DNA sequence data. Identification of the origins and possible causes of major insect radiations with special emphasis on the effects of trophic specializations, such as phytopahgy and parasitism. Specific questions of interest involve the origin of the higher flies (Cyclorrhapha), the systematics and evolution of leafminer flies (Agromyzidae), and the phylogenetic placement of Diptera within the Panorpoid orders.
