Responsibilities and Interests

Dr. Swartzel's teaching interests have been in basic and applied kinetic principles and engineering considerations relative to processing and packaging of biomaterials. His research interests continue to be associated with chemical and biological kinetics in continuous flow systems. Currently, he coordinates the Bioprocessing Programs for CALS, serves as the Director of the national NASULGC/Kellogg Food Systems Leadership Institute and site-director of The Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies. He served the department as interim head (1993-94) and head (1994-2004). He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Food Technologists and the ASAE-The Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food, and Biological Systems. During 2002-03 he was on special assignment with the UNC-Office of the President directing activities of the NC Technology Development Initiative Program. Dr. Swartzel currently serves on the faculty as a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and he is a 2006 recipient of the NC State University Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence.
