The Department's Scholarship
Committee attempts to provide an award to all eligible majors
with a B average or better. The average award is between $500
and $2,000 and the total annual award is ~$50,000. Recipients
are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial
need. Food Science students may also qualify for competitive scholarships
offered by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the professional
association for food scientists, and other organizations. Students
must complete a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Scholarship application to be eligible for a departmental award.
These applications must be completed and returned to the Department by March 1 of the year for which the scholarship
is requested. CALS scholarship applications may be submitted to
either Ms. Susan Kall in Room
119 Schaub Hall or in Room 115 Patterson Hall.
The average annual cost of pursuing
a baccalaureate degree at NC State is about $7,000 to $8,000 for
an in-state resident and $14,000 to $16,000 for an out-of-state
resident. NC State, however, provides significant scholarship
and financial support for students.
Food industry leaders and organizations encourage students to
prepare for careers in Food Science by providing scholarships.
Scholarships are based upon scholarship, character, extra-curricular
activity, leadership potential and professional interest. Need
may be a criteria for some scholarships, but it is not a requirement
for most. Incoming freshmen and continuing Food Science majors
may quality for competitive scholarships offered by the Institute
of Food Technologists (IFT) and other organizations.
Additional sources of financial aid for students are: (a) National
Defense Student Loans (b) Grants-in aid (c) Work Study (d) Part-time
Employment within the Department of Food Science and (e) Summer
Employment in the Food Industry. For further information, please

The details of the scholarships
awarded through the department are given below:
BENJAMIN W. KILGORE
This scholarship awards from six to ten students
awards totaling as much as $3000 each academic year. It is awarded
on academic achievement, financial need and character.
CAROLINA VIRGINIA DAIRY PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION
One or two students are awarded approximately
$600 for an academic year. Based on scholarship, character and
financial need, this scholarship is open to two or four year students.
CAROLINA TURKEYS
Two annual scholarships are awarded, with a
minimum amount of $1000 each. Shall be awarded based on recommendations
by the Scholarship Committee. Priority will be given to a two
year student. Must have financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
CRISTIE ABIGAIL "ABBI" FLEMING
DAIRY SCIENCE
The CA/VA Dairy Producers Assoc. Established
an endowment in the NC Dairy Foundation, Inc. The endowment was
established in memory of Abbi Fleming, a pre-med student in Zoology
who was killed in a car accident in 1998.
EAKES-TURNER
Dr. Lynn Turner and Beth Eakes Turner have established
this scholarship in the NC Agricultural Foundation
Inc. to provide support for two/four-year undergraduate students.
It is funded through Dr. & Mrs. Turner in honor of their parents.
FRANK BANCROFT & RACHEL KIRBY THOMAS
FS & FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES
This scholarship is funded through gifts and
is being established to honor Extension Professor, Frank Bancroft
Thomas and retired Extension Food Specialist, Rachel Kirby Thomas
for their 75 years of service to NC State. It will be used to
support undergraduates in FS or Nutrition at NC State, especially
those coming from areas for which seafood and or freshwater fisheries
are important.
GENERAL MILLS SCHOLARSHIP
Four undergraduate students are awarded $1,000
each as part of this scholarship.
HARVEY L & KATHLEEN R. BARNES
Established in 1963, eight to ten students receive
from $500 to $ 1000 awards. Eligibility is based upon scholarship,
leadership, character and financial need (Not required).
HASE & LENA MAIE SMITH
One to three (2 or 4 year) students are awarded
approximately $1500 each academic year. Selection is based on
academic achievement, character and leadership activities.
HAWKINS BRADLEY
The funds for this scholarship were contributed
by Mr. Bradley to aid our undergraduate program in promoting Food
Science studies focusing on meat processing and packaging. This
scholarship has been awarded since 1994.
IVAN D. & LILLIAN T. JONES SCHOLARSHIP
The funding was initiated by Ivan Jones in memory
of his wife, Lillian Jones. Students with an interest in basic
food science or nutrition are eligible for this $500 scholarship.
NANCY SIMS WEBB MEMORIAL FOOD SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Dr. Neil Webb established this endowment to
remember and honor the late Nancy Sims Webb. A scholarship in
the amount of $500 is awarded on the basis of academic achievement
and involvement in Food Science departmental activities to undergraduate
students in Food Science who are majoring in nutrition and/or
have a demonstrated interest in product development and sensory
tasting.
J. FRANK & MARGARET NEELY
These scholarships were created in 1974. Approximately
fifteen to twenty students are awarded scholarships ranging from
$300 to $1000 each academic year. Selection based on scholarship,
leadership, character and
fmancial need. (Not Required)
J0HN & KELLI RUSHING
This $300 scholarship is awarded each academic
year to a deserving freshman in Food Science. These funds here
set up in memory of Mrs. Rushing's father, Dr. Raymond Perkins
of Texas A&M. Dr. Rushing is a faculty member in the Department
of Food Science.
JOHN W. LONG
One award of between $500 and $600 is made annually
to an Agricultural Institute student in the Food
Processing, Distribution and Service curriculum with an interest
in meat processing. Selection is based upon
academic performance, personal character, leadership potential
and fmancial need. (Not required)
MID-ATLANTIC DAIRY BOOSTERS
One $500 award based upon scholarship, leadership,
character. Financial need is not required.
MOSE & HELEN KISER
This scholarship was endowed in 1973. Two to
five recipients receive a total of approximately $12,000 per year.
Selection is based upon scholarship, leadership, character, and
financial need (required). Preference is given to students from
Lincoln, Guilford or Wake Counties.
NATIONAL DAIRY PROMOTION & RESEARCH BOARD
Twenty NDPRB $1,000 scholarships are awarded
nationally each year. Junior and senior Food Science students
with interest in Dairy Science careers are encouraged to apply.
NATIONAL STARCH FOOD SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is open to juniors and seniors
majoring in Food Science. A total of $3,000 is available through
this scholarship.
PEGGY FOEGEDING MEMORIAL FOOD SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Dr. Allen
Foegeding in memory of his wife, Dr. Peggy Foegeding. A scholarship
in the amount of $600 would be made available to a deserving student
majoring in Food Science.
RECRUITING AND EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
Students from under-represented groups receive
as much as $2000 and an opportunity for a summer
internship with a sponsoring company. Students have been sponsored
by Hershey Foods, Gerber Foods, Nabisco Food Group and McNeil
Specialty Products.
ROBERT N. WOOD
One or two students are awarded approximately
$500 to $800 for this scholarship each academic year. This scholarship
is based upon academic performance, leadership potential and character,
and goes to a student(s) majoring in Food Science
S.E. FOOD PROCESSOR'S ASSOCIATION HONORING
DR. JOHN RUSHING
This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student
majoring in Food Science. This scholarship is presented to recognize
Dr. Rushing's contributions to industry and will be awarded by
the Scholarship committee.
TEXAS PETE SCHOLARSHIP (T.W. Garner Foods)
This is a merit based scholarship.
The Fellowship/Scholarship programs administered
by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) include a large number
of Graduate Fellowships, Junior/Senior Scholarships, and Freshman/Sophomore
Scholarships. The Department of Food Science at NC State is one
of the 50 departments in North America whose students are eligible
for IFT Scholarships, which range from $500 to $2000. Applicants
from NC State have received as many as ten awards in the past
several years.
NC State offers a competitive scholarship program for entering
freshmen to recognize and to encourage exceptional academic ability
and achievement. Graduating seniors of good character and leadership
potential who have excelled in their high school academic and
extracurricular endeavors may apply for a large number of merit
award opportunities at the university. Financial need is not a
consideration in the selection of recipients for these awards.
Nearly 80 merit awards, ranging up to full tuition and fees for
entering freshmen are awarded each year. Further information is
