Announcing . . . .

The history of a great university is punctuated with a few, defining moments when its future was secured. In those moments, leaders perceived an opportunity -- and seized it. They acted, not for themselves, but for the future generations of students whose lives could be changed forever.

North Carolina State University was born from such leaders acting at such a moment. More than a century ago, the Wataugans, a small group of leaders, saw the opportunity to improve North Carolina's economy through a new kind of education. Prepared with that new education -- broad and practical learning -- generations of NC State University alumni have assumed positions of leadership that have transformed our state and nation. The legacy of the Wataugans is a state with a robust, diversified economy driven by the alumni of this great university.

This is the moment that defines NC State's future. The university's upward momentum has brought it to this point....

North Carolina State University is engaged in a targeted fund raising effort, lasting through 1999, to increase significantly the level of private gift support for scholarship and fellowship endowments.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR NC STATE STUDENTS

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has so far earned more than $8-million toward endowments for student scholarships and fellowships, with a college-wide goal of $15-million.  The university has set an institutional goal of $80-million!

As far as we know, there is not now, nor has there ever been, an undertaking by any other institution of higher learning dedicated entirely to generating support for students.

Maintaining NC State University's forward motion and increasing student achievement through scholarship support will help ensure the University's rising position among major research institutions and add value to every NC State University diploma -- past, present and future.

Endowment funds give in perpetuity, creating a measure of financial security and providing an ongoing source of critical University support. No college or university today can expect to maintain its competitive edge without this kind of resource base. It is no coincidence that the public and private institutions staying at or near the top in all the major rankings of colleges and universities are those with the largest endowments.

The rising costs of higher education coupled with government and corporate downsizing have created an environment in which any institution of higher learning -- public or private -- must rely on substantial endowment and annual giving to succeed among its competitors.

In addition, Chancellor Larry K. Monteith and CALS Dean James L. Oblinger have placed an unusually high priority on the Campaign to serve as a catalyst for achieving specific non-monetary goals. These include providing NC State University with a vehicle for articulating its story and amplifying its differences from other institutions in order to dramatically improve its image within and outside its walls.
