The Dean Durward and Shirley Bateman

Scholarship Endowment

After almost 40 years in higher education, the last 12 as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University, Durward F. Bateman will retire on September 30, 1997. A native of Chowan County, North Carolina, Dean Bateman received a B.S. degree in Botany from NC State in 1956, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Pathology from Cornell University in 1958 and 1960, respectively. In 1979, Dean Bateman returned to NC State as Director of the NC Agricultural Research Service and Associate Dean of the College. He became Dean in February 1986 and is married to the former Shirley Byrum. They have three daughters.

Over the past 12 years, Dean Durward F. Bateman has led the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences through interesting and sometimes difficult times. His cooperative spirit and strong leadership have led to many advancements and accomplishments for the College. Here are just a few:

*Creation of the Department of Toxicology in 1987. Now rated among the top six

in the Country.

*Construction and staffing of the Vernon James Research and Extension

Center in Plymouth, NC in 1989.

*Renovation and addition to Scott Hall, completed in 1992.

*Establishment of the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education in 1994.

*In 1996 North Carolina was #2 in net farm income and #3 in agricultural

diversification in the United States.

*Establishment of the Biological Resources Building, completed in 1996.

*Increases in private contributions and partnerships with industry and granting

organizations from $18,600,000 in 1985 to more than $44,200,000 in 1996.

*The creation of a more seamless College. This has led to greater cooperation

between departments and divisions, thus encouraging more responsiveness and better relationships with external clients.

*Funding for the Agricultural Communications Building, now under construction.

Commissioner of Agriculture James A. Graham, a co-chairman of the Bateman Scholarship Campaign, recently made these remarks concerning Dean Bateman, "Dean Bateman has been the right person at the right time for North Carolina agriculture. His outstanding leadership of the College and cooperation with NCDA have led to tremendous growth in agriculture on the farm and in agribusiness in our fine state."

In December of 1996 , Dean Bateman received the prestigious "Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award" presented by the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation. Mr. W. B. Jenkins, President of Farm Bureau and also a co-chairman of the Bateman Scholarship Campaign, had these words to say about Dean Bateman, "Durward Bateman has truly been an outstanding leader and spokesman for North Carolina agriculture. His leadership of the College will be sorely missed."

The Bateman Scholarship will endow the Thomas Jefferson Scholars Program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Jefferson Scholars program was established in 1985 and has more than 40 student participants annually. This program is a challenging and academically enriching double degree program for students with an interest in agriculture and/or life sciences who also receive a degree in the humanities and social sciences. A goal of $500,000 has been established for the Bateman Scholars Program.

It is for these many reasons and a lifetime of devotion to agriculture and the life sciences that friends, colleagues, and family of Dean Durward and Shirley Bateman are establishing the DEAN DURWARD AND SHIRLEY BATEMAN SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT in the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation, Inc.
