Right in our own backyard -- in North Carolina's Tyrrell County -- is a place where nature's diversity converges. Stands of hardwoods, pine forests and pocosins are habitat to red wolf, black bear and white-tailed deer. Migratory waterfowl nest in the forested wetlands while the waters of Albemarle Sound, one of the state's principal estuaries, gently roll onto a pristine shoreline.

This Is Nature's Classroom...complete with lessons for old and young alike. This is the site of the 4-H Environmental Education Conference Center.

The 242-acre tract is home to a state-of-the-art facility for environmental programming and 4-H activities. It's a venue planned in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Conservation Fund with youths and adults in mind, so all can interact with nature in a place specially built to do so.

But as we come to explore, we do not want to exploit. That's why a comprehensive land use plan is being developed to assure maximum efficiency and minimum environmental impact. The North Carolina State University Department of 4-H Youth Development and the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund are overseeing this ambitious effort.

Plans include year-round lodging and dining facilities, conference rooms, classrooms and an infirmary. In addition, there will be a waterfront environmental teaching center and recreational areas.

The 4-H Environmental Education Conference Center will help us bring an environmental awareness to the citizens of North Carolina and beyond.

The 4-H Development Fund is involved in a drive to raise money to continue to enhance innovative center and its programs. Working with leaders in North Carolina communities and government, our goal is to raise an additional $8 million in cash and in-kind gifts.
