Graduate
Training and Courses
The Department offers a wide variety of research opportunities.
The course requirements for each degree program
provide the student with a strong foundation in Genetics and allow flexibility
in the program of study for the individual student.
During the first semester, new graduate
students participate in at least three laboratory rotations of five weeks
duration each. These rotations facilitate choosing a major professor and
research program for the remainder of their graduate training. Once associated
with a particular mentor, an advisory committee of at least three additional
professors is assembled. The majority of course work for the Ph.D. is completed
after approximately two years. At this point, the preliminary written and oral
examinations are taken.
