Instructor for Undergraduate Lecture and Laboratory Courses in GeneticsI am responsible for teaching the undergraduate Genetics laboratory course, and I am also one of the instructors for the undergraduate lecture course "Principles of Genetics". The undergraduate teaching program is designed to give students a firm foundation in basic genetic principles. Students may later take more advanced courses in their areas of interest. Many Life Sciences majors choose to minor in Genetics at the undergraduate level.
Our primary undergraduate course is "Principles of Genetics." It is a four credit hour course that covers a broad spectrum of topics from classical Mendelian genetics to molecular genetics. The three lecture hours per week integrate the history of Genetics, experimental approaches in Genetics and knowlege of basic genetic concepts at the population, organismal and molecular levels. A one hour per week problem session is conducted by graduate students in our department. The problem sessions have provided opportunities for graduate students to gain teaching experience under the supervision of faculty members. It also helps to ensure that our graduate students have a strong knowlege of all aspects of Genetics. The undergraduate
laboratory course "Elementary Genetics Laboratory" is
designed to introduce students to a wide variety of techniques in
diverse areas of genetics research and to reinforce basic principles
from the lecture course. I encourage the students to collect data
accurately, to master basic laboratory techniques, and to develop their
scientific writing skills. Students study classical genetics principles
and learn fly handling procedures using Drosophila melanogaster in a
linkage/gene mapping study. Human chromosomes are prepared for
karyotype analysis and karyotypes are constructed in our cytogenetics
laboratory. Experiments in molecular genetics techniques involving DNA
isolation, gel electrophoresis, and Southern transfers are conducted.
Other topics for experiments include population genetics, biochemical
genetics, and quantitative genetics. Graduate students have the
opportunity to teach a section of the laboratory course as part of
their teaching requirements. This has allowed additional sections the
course to be offered and has provided additional teaching experience
for our graduate students. Return to the Faculty Teaching Page. |
