Horticulture Field Laboratory (HFL)

Mission

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Horticulture Field Laboratory supports North Carolina State University’s educational, research and outreach efforts by offering students hands-on learning experiences close to campus in selected areas of horticulture and forestry; providing scientists with facilities and fields for a diverse array of horticultural and forestry research; serving as a demonstration and training site for numerous clientele and public groups; and offering Raleigh area citizens access to an urban green space in the J. C. Raulston Arboretum.

Overview

The Horticulture Field Laboratory is a facility of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina State University, and is located on Beryl Road in Raleigh, N.C. It is used primarily for teaching, research and extension activities. There are a total of 38 acres used in a variety of ways, including as open space, for annual trials, vegetable gardens and permanent plantings. Classroom and support buildings are also located within the field laboratory. The J.C. Raulston Arboretum is located on 8 acres within the field laboratory. Greenhouses, lath houses and container bed space also occupy portions of the field laboratory. The diploma presentations ceremony for Horticultural Science students each semester is held there.
