Taxonomy of Ornamental Plants
Plants studied are cultivated ornamentals with identification and nomenclatural
problems. Research objectives include an inventory of cultivated taxa
with their biology, improved quantitative descriptions, ordering of
the nomenclature, qualitative observations and notes, and providing
keys and other aids to identification. Methods include morphology, biometrics,
cytology and scanning electron microscopy.
Current research on new germplasm documentation, liriopogons, and international
collaboration in providing revisionary and floristic treatments of resupinate
papilionaceous legumes (Barbieria, Centrosema, Clitoria). Graduate programs
include taxa of students interest, with gymnosperms (Juniperus
horizontalis, Cryptomeria japonica), grapes (Vitis), and cultivated
ornamental trees of North Carolina (urban trees, Maritime Forest, Barrier
