I have held position splits from 100% Extension to 50% Research - 50%
Extension.
Present responsibilities:
Extension - information development and dissemination for asparagus,
cole crops, leafy crops, legumes, peppers, and tomatoes.
Research - cultural practices for the above crops and nutrient considerations
on all vegetable, precision seeding, intensive systems, nutrient cycling,
sustainable vegetable systems, drip fertigation, plasticulture and stand
establishment. I have had responsibilities for all commercial vegetable
crops at one time or another. Part of the development of new crops has
been to educate county agents in marketing and market opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE:
From April to November of 1964 I lived and worked with Swiss farm families
as part of the International Farm Youth Exchange program. During this
time I was learning about the Swiss people and their way of life and
in turn relating the American life to them.
Technical visits/tours to Colombia(5), Peru(4), Uruguay(3), Switzerland(3),
Italy(2), Mexico(2), Australia(2), New Zealand(2), Chile(2), Guatemala,
Hungary, Israel.
Consultancy with various US farmers, US asparagus producers, ProEXPO
in Colombia, INIA and PENTA in Uruguay, and private firms in Argentina,
Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, and Uruguay.
Foreign lanuage proficiencies in Spanish and German.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN EXTENSION PROGRAM
I. New Crops and Technologies
Introduction of processing tomatoes in N. C.
Establishment of asparagus industries in N. C.
Drip irrigation plastic increased via cooperative demonstrations and
applied research; now 6000 acres with 2- to 4-fold yield increases.
Establishment of the first large scale (800 acres) broccoli production
in the state.
Establishment of the first large scale (300 acres) direct seeded sweet
onion production in the state.
Introduction of double row cabbage production systems.
Introduction of commercial strip till pumpkin and squash production
in the state.
Education (via tours) of over 210 vegetable growers about methods of
improving their production and marketing systems by seeing what competitors
in other states and Mexico are doing.
II. Meetings and Group Organizational Activities
Established a technical session at the NC Watermelon Growers Association,
1995.
Helped establish the N.C. Fresh Vegetable Growers Association 1977.
Vegetable EXPO combined, for first time, meetings of the N. C.
Fresh Vegetable Growers, Yam Commission, Potato Growers and Watermelon
Growers 1984.
Helped start statewide area vegetable schools to let farmers know disadvantages
and advantages of vegetable production. This reduced meeting numbers
and increased contact with growers.
Leader of many multi-discipline cooperative projects, i.e. multi-county
pepper IPM; intensive vegetable systems in the sandhills; evaluation
of high pressure pesticide sprayers.
Chairman and Secretary of the Extension Vegetable Crops Coordinating
Committee several times and continue to provide leadership for all specialist
working with vegetable crops.
Provided leadership for the system of Extension Agent Certification
and increased In-Service training in Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced
levels of instruction leading to a better trained and more professional
cadre of Extension Field Faculty with commercial horticulture responsibility.
III. External Funding
External funding for applied research and extension programs that mold
together into a package that present improved technologies to N. C.
growers in a "Grower Friendly" way.

IV.Personal Achievements
Chairman of ASHS Commercial Horticulture Working Group (Extension).
Publication of many leaflets and 8 regional and 2 national award-winning
bulletins.
Associate Editor for HortTechnology (journal aimed at professional
horticulture practitioners).
Vice President of Extension Division for American Society for Horticultural
Science helped revised national headquarters operations. President of
Southern Region of American Society for Horticultural Science increased
paper presentations by 50%.

group of 'Intensive Vegetable Systems'. 1994 Agent training sessions
for 'Irish potatoes' and 'biotechnology information'. Prepared bulletins
on postharvest handling of tomatoes, transplants, cole crops, and plasticulture.

and two sessions on cole crops. Prepared bulletins on intensive management
systems and producing early vegetables.

Eight day production and marketing tour of Florida vegetable industry
for 30 North Carolina growers. Produced 8 slide sets for education program
on intensive vegetable systems. Seven day marketing tour of east coast
markets for 15 Uruguayan producers. Ten day survey of vegetable industry
in North Carolina and California for 3 Uruguayan research administrators.

Eight day production and marketing tour of California and Arizona vegetable
industry for 25 North and South Carolina growers. Produced 2 slide sets

Introduction of a new crop - direct seeded onions on 300 acres. Selected
for first Extension Leadership Development Institute. Assisted in coordination

Co-chairman of first N. C. Vegetable EXPO which combined 4 vegetable
organizations' meetings into a 3 day meeting and trade show. Program
