The Horticultural Science department is located in Kilgore
Hall, on the west end of the north campus at
Hillsborough Street and Brooks Avenue. The building is well equipped
with classrooms, laboratories, offices, and cold storage rooms to serve
the teaching, research and extension programs of the department.
Kilgore Greenhouse
The Horticultural Science department is enhanced by
outstanding support facilities. Approximately 32,600 square feet of
greenhouse space is used for teaching and research. Most of the space is
located immediately behind Kilgore Hall, the remaining space is located
at the Method Road Greenhouses, and at the Horticultural Field Labortory
(HFL).
Method Road Greenhouse
The college of Agriculture and Life Sciences maintains four greenhouse
units of one to three ranges each at Method Road. Horticultural Science
has 5,300 square feet of space there used for research.
Horticultural Field Laboratory
The HFL is 2 miles west of Kilgore
Hall. Students will become very familiar with HFL because our NCSU
Arboretum is located there. The NCSU Arboretum contains an extensive
collection of plants collected from all over the world. The arboretum
serves the community as a public facility but is also an important
"living classroom" where students get hands on experience in such
horticultural areas as propagation, landscape design, garden
installation, plant identification, and landscape maintenance.
JC Raulston Arboretum
The mission of the JC
Raulston Arboretum is to enrich and expand urban and residential
landscapes by promoting a greater diversity of superior and better
adapted landscape plants for creative, environmentally sound landscapes.
