- December 2002
- December 12, 2002: Dr. Thomas
Ranney received a $12,500 grant from the Horticultural
Research Institute for his proposal "Developing
sterile forms of potentially invasive nursery crops".
- December 5: Dr. Yong
Xu began his research as a visiting scientist
with Dr. Todd
Wehner on Fusarium wilt and virus resistance
in watermelon.
- November 2002
- November 4-5, 2002: Drs. Jeanine
Davis and Mary
Peet gave seminars on Production of Medicinal
Herbs and Organic Greenhouse Vegetable Production,
respectively, at the new Controlled Environment Agriculture
Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. Drs.
Davis and Peet are collaborators on a NIH grant with
Native American Botanics in Tucson and the University
of Arizona to study production of medicinal herbs
in aeroponic systems.
- Dr. August
DeHertogh is the 2002 recipient of the American
Horticulture Society's H. Marc Cathey Award
for achievement in horticultural research, based on
his research on bulbs.
- Graduate students James
Gibson and Todd
Cavins have have been chosen by FIRST, a floriculture
industry research and scholarship trust, as the 2002
recipients of the John Carew Scholarship.
- Dr. Stuart Warren,
Instructor Bryce
Lane, and student Vance Whitaker received
the 2002 Resource Development Awards for their
successful efforts to raise $20,000 for this year's
ALCA team expenses.
- October 2002
- October 8-9, 2002: Dr. Todd
Wehner and graduate student Nihat
Guner presented "Survey results of graduate
student training at U.S. land-grant universities"
at the annual meeting of the University-Industry
Consortium in Research Triangle Park, NC.
- Dr. Dennis Werner
received $2,000.00 from the J. Frank Schmidt Family
Charitable Foundation to support a grant entitled
"Development of Improved Cultivars of Redbud
Demonstrating Novel Ornamental Characters and Improved
Propagation Potential".
- October 4, 2002: Dr. Dennis
Werner was recognized by the Rex Blood Plan
as being one of the top 40 blood donors in
the 40-year history of the organization. A breakfast
recognizing the top 40 donors was held at Rex Hospital.
Werner is currently only 2 pints short of contributing
10 gallons.
- September 2002
- September 30, 2002: Mr. Larry
Bass retired from the Department of
Horticultural Science after 30 years of service in
extension, specializing in home horticulture, and
youth and 4-H programs.
- August 2002
- August 30, 2002: Dr. Vijay Joshi completed
his research on nematode resistance in cucumber as
a postdoctoral associate with Todd
Wehner, and accepted a position at the Boyce
Thompson Institute, Ithaca, NY.
- August 11-17, 2002: Ronghao Song, Gabriele
Gusmini and Todd
Wehner presented their paper "Screening
the watermelon germplasm collection for resistance
to gummy stem blight" at the 26th International
Horticulture Congress in Toronto, Canada.
- August 11-17, 2002: Amnon Levi, Claude Thomas, Todd
Wehner, Xingping Zhang and Angela Davis presented
their paper "Toward an integrated linkage map
of watermelon" at the 26th International Horticulture
Congress in Toronto, Canada.
- August 11-17, 2002: Todd
Wehner and Nihat
Guner presented their paper "Prediction
of growth stage using days and heat units in four
cultigens of cucumber" at the 26th International
Horticulture Congress in Toronto, Canada.
