World Food Day 2007
Please mark your calendars, October 16 is World Food Day 2007. As in the past years, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences along with the College of Natural Resources will host “The Borlaug Annual Lecture Series”. Events are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 22 and 23. The Borlaug lecturer will be Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, President of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment. The topic of lecture as well as event venue and times will be announced in the near future.

*Dr. Pedro A. Sanchez was the first NCSU Borlaug Lecturer.

Dr. Pedro A. Sanchez is one who spans both Soil Science and Forestry. He is currently the Director of Tropical Agriculture at the Earth Institute of Columbia University, New York City. He also is a Senior Research Scholar for the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction and Co-Chair of the hunger Task Force of the Millennium Project, an advisory body to the United Nations. He is a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was named a MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellow in 2003 and received the World Food Prize in 2002. With the proceeds from the award he and his wife Cheryl Palm set up a foundation for African development. He has received decorations from the government of Columbia and Peru and was awarded the International Soil Science Award and the International Service in Agronomy Award from the joint Agronomy-Soil Science Societies. In February 2001, the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium awarded him a Doctor Honoris Causa degree for his work on Tropical soils in Africa. In August 2001, Sanches was anointed a Luo Elsder with the name of Odera Kang'o by the Luo community of Western Kenya, in recognition for his assistance in eliminating hunger from many villages in the region.

*The Borlaug Annual Lecture Series was established in 2006 jointly by The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the college of Natural Resources. Each year, an outstanding speaker will present a lecture on a topic germane to the professional interests within either or both Colleges.
