Our lab is interested in structures, biosynthesis, and metabolic engineering of plant natural products. We are focusing particularly on medicinal and nutritional natural products. We use integrated approachs including phytochemistry, metabolomics, functional genomics, and biochemistry to understand plant, tissue, and cell specificity of biosynthesis of plant natural products. Current research is being conducted on proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, sesquiterpenoids, and essential oils. Using model systems to understand molecular , biochemical, and structural mechanisms of these natural products, we then utilize our discoveries towards metabolic engineering of nutrients to improve crops for value-added benefits.
