Bark of a mature specimen is reddish brown  peely, flaky and shaggy.

Bark of a young tree is also peely and flaky.

Juniperus virginiana is evergreen. Here the reddish color of the bark is very apparent.

Bark of a large  Eastern Red Cedar.
