Text Box: Occurs on dry upland slopes and rocky ridges.  The leaf shape is similar to Quercus michauxii. However, the difference in bark helps to distinguish the two from each other. Also, Quercus michauxii occurs most frequently on low moist areas and in swamps.

Deeply ridged bark of Quercus montana.

Ridges of the bark are a distinguishing characteristic.

Leaf shape is simple, and the blade is shallowly lobed. Very similar leaf shape to Q. michauxii. However the two can be distinguished by the bark.

Dark grayish brown bark with deep furrows.
