The S.E. Kelman Memorial Scholarship

For more information and to apply please visit the Kelman Scholars Web site. S.E. Kelman

The S.E. Kelman Memorial Scholarship is intended to honor the life and memory of Mr. Samuel E. Kelman, former CEO of the Metalart Corporation in Providence, Rhode Island and late brother of Dr. Arthur Kelman. This scholarship was established by Dr. Arthur Kelman; NC State University Distinguished Scholar, Emeritus Reynolds Professor of Plant Pathology and Forestry, member of the NC State University Department of Plant Pathology faculty for 15 years, and former Chairman of the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and friends and family. It is hoped that this scholarship will enhance opportunities for undergraduates in the Department of Plant Pathology at NC State University through internships.

S.E. Kelman Memorial Scholarship interns gain research experience under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department of Plant Pathology. The successful applicant will also receive academic credit for the intership by enrolling in PP 493. The scholarship application includes a checklist used to assess the student's research interest and to match students with potential faculty mentors.

Awards are made to one or more students annually by the S.E. Kelman Internship Committee as appointed by the Head of the Department of Plant Pathology and as approved by the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. All undergraduate students in the College of Forest Resources or in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with an interest in forest or plant pathology are eligible. Preference is given to rising sophomores or juniors. A second level of preference is given to a student with an interest in phytobacteriology. Awards are typically in the amount of $500 per semester or summer term (both sessions). Depending on availability, awards may be renewed once, up to a limit of $1,000 and one acdemic year maximum duration.
