Rick Cartwright

Dr. Richard Cartwright is Extension Plant Pathologist and Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Arkansas, where he has served since 1992.  Dr. Cartwright’s extension and research efforts include management of important diseases of rice, soybean, wheat and other crops, where he focuses on disease monitoring, cultural practices that impact disease, and the economical use of fungicides.

Dr. Cartwright actively publishes written materials covering his extension and research work, including multiple peer-reviewed research publications, numerous reviewed publications in Fungicide and Nematicide Tests or Biological and Cultural Tests, and over 50 other nonrefereed research publications.

In addition to making hundreds of presentations at the local, state, and regional levels over the past few years, Dr. Cartwright is recognized regionally and nationally for contributions on diseases to the Rice Disease Newsletter and Wheat Disease Newsletter.  He has also written numerous publications for the popular press and regularly gives television and radio interviews. For the past two years he has served as team leader for outreach efforts in the USDA-funded Rice Coordinated Agriculture Project, a multi-state, multi-institutional program aimed at bringing the work of molecular biologists and breeders together. 

His exemplary performance in his extension activities has been recognized by receiving the AACES Specialist Performance Award in 2000, the John White Award for Outstanding State Extension Faculty in 2001 from the University of Arkansas, and the Distinguished Rice Research and Education Award by the Rice Technical Working Group in 2004.  Dr. Cartwright’s continued strong performance and expertise are valued assets to colleagues and growers throughout the region.
