Nursery stock and sprinkler irrigation. All water is collected and reused so none gets into the Upper Newport Bay watershed. Duckweed in irrigation run-off collection basin. Duckweed consumes fertilizers and, if healthy indicates low Pythium levels in run-off water.
Irrigation run-off collection basin. The system of water recycling was devised with help from the University of California Cooperative Extension Service. Collection basin overflows into a channel filled with potted canna plants which use more of the water and fertilizers.
Potted cannas growing in irrigation run-off water. Note the small quantity of water running from the irrigation run-off holding pond into the run-off channel. This small trickle of water is typical for the irrigation practice used at this nursery.
Final plastic-lined holding pond with duckweed containing all the run-off water from acres and acres of irrigated nursery stock. This water is pumped into a tanker truck and spread on the nursery roadways for dust abatement. Thus, no nursery irrigation run-off appears outside the nursery. (left)
