INSTITUTIONS OR DONORS INTERESTED IN SPONSORING THE WORKSHOP, MINISYMPOSIUM, OR PARTICIPANTS AS WELL AS THE SURVEY IN LATIN AMERICA AND BEYOND ARE ENCOURAGED TO DO SO AND WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGED. Dr.

ORGANIZER. Background and Goals Interest in the taxonomy of Phytophthora, Pythium and related genera has been stimulated in the last five years with the introduction of powerful molecular phylogenies, the integration of morphological and molecular identification, and the increased survey efforts in different regions of the world including Australia, Europe, and North America. Several novel species of Phytophthora have been described in the past few years in the referred areas. Research in Latin and Central America regarding Phytophthora, Pythium and related genera has been postponed and little is known on the occurrence, distribution, and management of these important organisms. The richness of agricultural products in Latin America encompassed with the increase in trade with this region make the plant pathologists working in this area of the world ideal candidates to receive the benefits of this workshop and minisymposium. Ten scientists from Latin America participated at the 1st minisymposium and 1st International Phytophthora and Pythium workshop http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/plantpath/activities/societies/stramen/news.html. Four scientists including Liliana Aragon, National Agrarian University, La Molina, Lima, Peru; Gabriela Chacon, International Potato Center, Ecuador; Hilda Silva, School of Postgraduates, Texcoco, Mexico; and Silvia Fernandez, "Universidad Michoacana San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Mexico" were partially sponsored by the offices of the Vice Provost for International Affairs-NCSU, and Dr. Larry Nelson, Assistant Dean for International Programs, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, North Carolina State University, USA. In the past five years, two scientists from the PPIL and the Department of Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University - Drs. Gloria Abad and Jorge Abad - participated as instructors in three international workshops presented in Latin America: Mexico in 2002, Peru in 2004, and Argentina 2005. These events were organized to provide training in morphological and molecular identification of fungi and straminipiles with emphasis in the genera Phytophthora and Pythium. Close to 100 scientists from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Spain, and Uruguay are going to participate at the "Strengthening the Basis for a Survey of the Straminipiles: Phytophthora and Pythium in the Americas and Beyond." The
second minisymposium is organized to strenghthen the basis for a "Survey
of the Oomycetes Phytophthora and Pythium in the Americas
and beyond." After receiving training in the taxonomy of these
oomycetes during the workshop and minisymposium, scientists will be
more skilled in working in their respective countries and institutions
in order to organize the survey. Our goals are to learn about the diversity
of these straminipiles in the Americas in order to adopt better control
measures (management practices). This cooperation will be guided and
supported by the Plant Pathogen Identification Laboratory at North Carolina
State University, USA and instructors of the Phytophthora/Pythium
workshops. Our ultimate goal is to publish these results in pertinent
refereed plant pathology journals or other publications of importance
to the discipline and in the proceedings of an open workshop "Integration
of Traditional and Modern Approaches for Taxonomy and Evolution of Phytophthora,
Pythium and related genera" that we are organizing in association
with the 9th International Congress
of Plant Pathology which will be held in Turin, Italy during 2008.
Submission of Abstracts: Prospective participants are invited to submit abstracts for oral presentations (30 minutes) on research on the taxonomy and identification of Phytophthora and/or Pythium in the Americas and beyond. Abstracts must be written in English or Spanish, and the length of the work including the title, author(s), affiliation(s), contact details, abstract should not exceed of 1 page (letter size, 8.5" x 11"). Participants at the minisymposium must be registered for the Second International Workshop for the Morphological and Molecular Identification of the Straminipiles: Phytophtora and Pythium. For
