USDA-ARS Maize Disease Resistance Genetics at NC State

Research Goals

1. To identify and map new sources of fungal resistance from diverse
maize germplasm.

2. To characterize the mode of action of quantitative resistance genes
and eventually clone the genes themselves.

We are concentrating on two important corn diseases; Gray Leaf Spot and Southern Corn Leaf Blight. We are generating near-isogenic lines and developing controlled environment assays to help analyze quantitative resistance at a phenotypic and molecular level. A collection of genetically diverse maize lines is being characterized for disease resistance in the field and quantitative trait loci are being mapped in appropriate populations.
