A long term study of the polyporoid wood decay fungi in North Carolina was initiated in 1997, after a major hurricane (Hurricane Fran) downed trees throughout the Piedmont of North Carolina. Initial results from intensive sampling of a "typical" Piedmont mixed hardwood-pine site showed 56 polypore species representing 37 genera in five families on 24 taxa of woody plants. Five of these fungi are reported for the first time in North Carolina. Fourteen of the host-fungus associations were new reports for the United States. This prompted the continuation and expansion of this project to include the entire state and wood-decay fungi in the Aphyllophorales.

As further collections are made and results anyalyzed, detailed distribution maps, species checklists and host lists are being made available. Summaries are being published in the journal Mycotaxon. The full checklists with maps are available here (see below).

Below is a map of North Carolina counties that have been visited during the course of this study. A primary resource for our collecting has been the State Parks and Natural Areas System, maintained by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the state of North Carolina. The rich biodiversity of North Carolina is well-reflected in the variety and abundance of sites available through the parks system. Additional collections have been made in National Forests and as part of the All-Taxa Biological Inventory of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I: Biogeography and hosts of poroid wood decay fungi in North Carolina:  species of Phellinus and Schizopora

ABSTRACT

Distribution and host plants in North Carolina are given for 21 species of Phellinus and three species of Schizopora. A county distribution map is provided for each species. Phellinus johnsonianus, P. linteus and P. melleoporus and Schizopora flavipora are reported for the first time in North Carolina. Numerous new fungus-host plant associations are reported.

II: Biogeography and hosts of poroid wood decay fungi in North Carolina: species of Ceriporia , Ceriporiopsis and Perenniporia

ABSTRACT:

Distribution and host plants in North Carolina are given for 6 species of Ceriporia , 2 of Ceriporiopsis and 10 of Perenniporia . A county distribution map is provided for each of the taxa with seven reported for the first time in North Carolina. Numerous new fungus-host plant associations are reported.

IV: Biogeography and hosts of poroid wood decay fungi in North Carolina: species of Fomes, Fomitopsis, Fomitella and Ganoderma.

ABSTRACT:

Distribution and host species are given for two species of Fomes, one species of Fomitella, four species of Fomitopsis and five species of Ganoderma. A county distribution map is provided for eight species. Numerous new fungus-host plant associations are reported.

V: Biogeography and hosts of poroid wood decay fungi in North Carolina: species of Abortiporus, Bondarzewia, Grifola, Heterobasidion, Laetiporus and Meripilus.

ABSTRACT:

Distribution and host plants are provided for two species of Abortiporus, three species of Laetiporus and one species each of Bondarzewia, Grifola, Heterobasidion and Meripilus. County distribution maps are provided for each species as well.

VI: Biogeography and hosts of poroid wood decay fungi in North Carolina: species of Trametes and Trichaptum.

ABSTRACT:

Distribution and host plants are provided for seven species of Trametes and six species of Trichaptum. Twenty three of the host-fungus combinations reported here are new records for the United States. County distribution maps are provided for each species as well.
