Research Interests:
Bio-fuel production and waste management: A bioprocess called thermophilic anaerobic digestion was developed from the laboratory to the commercial farm. The process can convert animal wastes into biogas fuel and other nutrient resources. The patented process and apparatus are simple, low-cost yet efficient in operation.
Keratinase technology: A feather-degrading bacterium was discovered and isolated. Its keratinase and the gene encoding the enzyme were isolated and sequenced. Genetic engineering improved the yield and scale-up fermentation produced the enzyme in large quantity. Application research has demonstrated that the keratinase can improve feed digestibility and degrade prion protein.
