Extension and Research Interests:
My extension responsibilities are related to broiler nutrition and management, and nutrient and waste management. Educational nutrition programs include the North Carolina Turkey Industry Days and Poultry Supervisors� Short Course, the Carolina Poultry Nutrition Conference and short courses, workshops, and seminars held periodically throughout the state and abroad. Topics include broiler nutrition and feeding, broiler health and management, effects of broiler breeders on broiler performance, efficacy of feed additives (coccidiostats, antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, etc.), and nutritional factors that affect enteric health and meat quality. An emphasis is made on broiler house air quality issues.
My research goals are: 1) To understand mechanisms of nitrogen and amino acid utilization, to improve efficacy of low crude protein diets in broiler chickens and minimize nitrogen environmental impact, including air emissions; 2) To develop computerized growth models to be used as tools to determine economical optimal management practices and feeding programs; 3) To evaluate feed additives, feedstuffs, feed processing methods, and their effects on intestinal pathobiology, specific immunity against Eimeria spp., gut microbiota dynamics, and microbial uricase activity; and 4) To estimate the optimum dietary electrolyte balance and mineral requirements for bone growth in broilers.
