DISCUSSION OF OBJECTIVES and 2004 MEETING SITE:

Discussion was called to order by Chair Rick Mascagni at 4:00 p.m., January 29, 2002. Secretary/Treasurer Baozhu Guo presented the revised Objectives of SRIEG-51. Amendment was made by Dave Wilson and seconded. The vote was voiced and the revised objectives were accepted as follow:

1) To exchange information and coordinate efforts to identify and develop germplasm with resistance to contamination by mycotoxins, to devise improved agronomic practices and sanitation procedures during product storage and processing.

2) To exchange information regarding the mode of action of significant acute and chronic effects of mycotoxins on domestic animals and human health.

3) To exchange information on epidemiology, biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology of toxigenic fungi and mycotoxins as they relate to the environment unique to the Southern U.S.

4) To exchange information on the yearly extent of mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi in food and feed grains, and the development of efficient economical analytical methods for assessment of mycotoxins.

5) To highlight advances and coordinate interactions among the Southern workers by facilitating discussion and sponsoring appropriate workshops, training, symposia, and collaboration.

2004 Meeting site:

Baozhu Guo made a presention to have the 2004 SRIEG-51 annual meeting in CIMMYT and co-sponsor the International Aflatoxin/Fumonisin Workshop in CIMMYT in 2004.

Hamed Abbas brought up the discussion made in 2001 business meeting in Atlanta by Dave Wilson about sponsoring a workshop in 2003. Dave Wilson made few comments. Motion died for lack of second.

Motion was made by Arnold Bruns and seconded by Ken Damanna to authorize Baozhu Guo to study the feasibility to co-sponsor the workshop with CIMMYT in 2004. There was discussion about the meeting site and workshop. The motion was approved. Javier Betran, Steve Moore, and Dave Wilson expressed interests to assist Baozhu Guo on this matter.
