Minutes of Annual Meeting of Southern Regional Information Group-51

Mycotoxins in Foods and Feed Grain

January 20, 1998 - Quality Inn - Atlanta, Georgia



 

Meeting was called to order in Atlanta, GA at the Quality Inn, Atlanta Airport Motel at 10:00 AM, January 20, 1998 by Dr. N.W. Widstrom, chair of SRIEG-51. There were 22 participants in attendance (please see list of participants). After opening remarks by Dr. Widstrom, Dr. O.W. Barnett, the newly appointed USDA administrative advisor for IEG-51 was introduced and made additional comments about the purpose and objectives of IEG-51 and its recent extension until the year 2002.

LOUISIANA

J.S. Russin, Department of Plant Pathology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. Corn hybrid susceptibility to A. flavus infection and production of aflatoxin.


R.L. Brown, Food and Feed Safety Research Unit, USDA-ARS, SRRC, New Orleans, LA. Report on aflatoxin elimination research.

TEXAS

L.F. Kubena, USDA-ARS, Food Animal Protection Research Laboratory, College Station, TX. Effects of aflatoxins on cecal volatile fatty acids and susceptibility to Salmonella typhimurium colonization in broiler chicks.

 

GEORGIA

D.M. Wilson and N.W. Widstrom, University of Georgia, CPES and USDA-ARS, Insect Biology and Management Research Laboratory, Tifton, GA. Report on aflatoxin contamination survey in South Georgia corn.

 

     After a 1-hour recess for lunch, state reports were continued:

R.T. Riley, toxicology and Mycotoxin Research Unit, USDA-ARS, Athens, GA. Report on research activities of USDA Toxicology and Mycology research unit; the nephrotoxicity of fumonisin B1 is greater than originally estimated. The toxicity of sphinganine, the sphingolipid which accumulates in animals exposed to fumonisin B1 was investigated in cell line studies.

Wilson, USDA-ARS and University of Georgia, Tifton, GA. Progress on use of NOR A. parasiticus mutant for screening germoplasm for resistance to aflatoxin contamination.

 

ALABAMA

N.K. Gurung, Animal and Dairy Science Dept., Auburn University, AL. Presentation of effects of fumonisin B1 contaminated feeds on weanling Angora goats.

K.L. Bowen, Department of Plant Pathology, Auburn University, AL. Report on epidemiology project on biological control of A. flavus fungal invasion of peanuts with bacterial isolates.

R.A. Shelby, Department of Plant Pathology, Auburn University, Alabama. Dihydroergosine in Claviceps africana infected sorghum.

B.A. Kemppainen, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University, AL. Presented information on feed related anterior enteritis of the equine and the consumption of fumonisin B1. Also presented a report on In vitro studies to assess immunotoxicity of fungal toxins (fumonisins, ergovaline and ergine) in mice.

 

 

DELAWARE

L.M. Sosnoskie, University of Delaware, Newark, DE. Report on her graduate research project.

MISSISSIPPI

G.L. Windham, USDA-ARS, Mississippi State University, MS. Provided reports on 1997 research activities, which included the development of corn germplasm resistant to aflatoxin production by A. flavus. Evaluation of aflatoxin accumulation in transgenic BT corn hybrids after simultaneous infestation with corn insect larvae and inoculation with A. flavus.

 



BUSINESS MEETING


Business meeting was convened with discussion about time and proposed sit of the 1999 meeting; proposed sites were New Orleans and Atlanta. If New Orleans was selected, it was suggested that the meeting be scheduled after Mardi Gras. Officers for 1999 were introduced; Chair, Gary Windham. USDA-ARS, Miss. State, MS 39762 and Vice-Chair, John Russin (who has since resigned after accepting a position in Illinois). Selection of the Secretary-Treasurer was completed; Bruce Manning, Auburn University, AL 36849 agreed to serve in the position for the year 1999.

 TREASURERS REPORT

Bank account is maintained at First Liberty Bank, Macon, Georgia. Bank balance for IEG-51 account was $1,110.50 as of March 31, 1998. The new editor of Mycotoxicology Newsletter is Dr. Angelo Visconti, Via Amendola 197F, 1-70126 Bari, Italy. Submissions to the newsletter can be sent Margaret Radlow, VICAM, 313 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02172.

Motion for adjournment was made and seconded. Dr. Widstrom reminded participants that the meeting would resume at 8:30 AM, Wednesday, January 21.



Meeting was called to order 8:30 AM, January 21 by Chairman Widstrom.State reports were continued.

State reports were continued with completion of reporting from Georgia and Alabama. For purposes of clarity, these reports have been included in the State Reports Section, above.

 

With completion of all state reports, adjournment was called for and approved.
