Beach Resort

We will arrive at the Blockade Runner Resort at Wrightsville Beach around 4:30 p.m.  In North Carolina, you can drive from the beautiful Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean in about five hours.  NC State University is located about half way between the mountains and the sea.

We will take a bus tour of Wrightsville Beach, which is an island, just before we stop for the evening.  Wrightsville Beach is one of the many barrier islands that dot the North Carolina coast from South Carolina to Virginia.

The Blockade Runner Resort offers lots of water related activities, such as swimming, sailing, parasailing, beachcombing, and just relaxing on the beach.  It fronts the Atlantic Ocean on the east side with a wide sandy beach.  The west side fronts Banks Channel, which is just off the Intracoastal Waterway.

Large yachts often anchor overnight in Banks Channel during the fall and spring, as they travel from North to South with the seasons.

Take your shoes off and walk on the beach!  Catch a sand flea – that is a good thing.  Ask one of the locals to show you how.  Sit and look for shark teeth in the area of the beach that differentiates low and high tides.  Put a whelk to your ear and “listen” to the ocean.  Watch a plover dance along the beach!  Collect seashells.  Ask Dr. Russ to show you how to hold a blue shell crab without being bitten – let’s hope that he can do that!  You will have about two hours to explore the beach before our meal.  A large fishing pier is just a few blocks away.  There are several gifts shops nearby for souvenirs.  You will have full access to the recreational facilities at the Blockade Runner Resort.  This is your time to relax and to get to know your friends in agriculture from throughout the country.  Have a good time!  We want you to come back to NC State University to visit with us again.

Beach Music and Shagging

After dinner, you will have about an hour to explore the beach.  Watch the sunset.  See the fishing trawlers heading out for the night.  Then, the sounds of beach music will fill the air.  Beach music?  Music played at the beach?  Not hardly.

Beach music is a little rhythm and blues mixed with a little soul and a little disco.  The result is a sound that originated in the Carolinas.  It’s a southern sound!  You have not experienced the beach until you have felt beach music.  It will move you!  Famous beach music bands include Chairmen of the Board (General Johnson!), The Embers, The Band of Oz, The Drifters, and The Coastline Band.  Songs include “Carolina Girls,” “Your More than a Number in My Little Red Book,” “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” and “I’m Lookin’ for a Love.”  Students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University love beach music!  You will too.  Want to try some before you come?  Click here and turn up your speakers.  Enjoy!

We are very fortunate to have The Coastline Band booked for a private concert in our own ballroom from about 7:30 to 10:00 p.m!  This band is famous throughout the world.  It is one of the most popular beach music bands ever.  You can checkout their web site if you would like to get a taste of what is in store for you.  Get ready for some great tunes!

Once the beach music fills the air, it is time to shag!  Austin Powers?  Oh Groovy, Baby.  No!  Shagging is not hip-hop dancing.  It doesn’t bounce.  It glides!  It like sliding on ice.  It is smooth!  Unless you have been to the Carolina coast, you probably have never seen a dance like it.  Don’t worry.  We will teach you to shag.  Luke, our Secretary, is a shagging expert.  He even has shagging shoes!  Luke says, “Shag feels great with the right music.  It will be fun!”

We are going to have a great time at the beach!  We will listen to beach music, do a little shagging, get to know each other, walk on the beach, sit around the pool, conduct DTA business under the palm trees, and just take it easy.  We will get back to the hotel around midnight.  Come experience North Carolina!
