Vegetable Diseases and Their Management

Characteristics of diseases common in the south and practices to control them are discussed in the remainder of this chapter. Local Extension offices, disease and insect clinics, and the guides listed at the end of the book may help with diagnosis and disease identification. Diseases that occur in a wide range of hosts and are controlled by similar practices are grouped by pathogen. Diseases specific to a particular vegetable or family of crops are grouped by host family and discussed at the end of this chapter.

Diseases that occur in a wide range of hosts:

Damping-off and Root Rots
Viruses
Verticillium wilt
Southern stem blight or stem rot
Fusarium wilt
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Specific Diseases

Diseases discussed here attack only one vegetable or only one family of vegetables. Therefore, rotation between these crops is likely to be a successful production strategy. Groupings here are by family, but diseases are also listed alphabetically by the common name of the disease in the Disease management section, which is intended to be used as a guide to planning rotations. Consult individual crop chapters for lists of resistant cultivars.

Diseases Primarily of Cucurbits
Diseases primarily of Cole Crops
Diseases Primarily of Beans
Diseases Primarily of Solanaceous Crops
Diseases of Sweet Corn
Diseases of Sweetpotatos
