At the heart of Animal and Poultry Waste Management Center activities is the Waste Processing Facility.
This facility houses a variety of equipment such as extruders, a fluidized bed dryer, flash dehydrators and pellet mills designed to process by-products. The facility is within North Carolina State University's Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory, which contains cattle, fish, poultry and swine research units. Through the Waste Processing Facility and a nearby composting facility, the center provides the means to develop, evaluate and demonstrate novel methods of managing the by-products of animal agriculture and of converting these resources into useful, valuable products.
The Waste Processing Facility played in integral role, for example, in the development of a mortality processing method that produces a product that has been approved for refeeding to livestock and poultry. A company in the private sector is planning to build a central processing facility in Eastern North Carolina that will use this process. At the same time, significant progress is being made in developing manure treatment methods that produce value-added products. |
