Master of Science in Zoology
ADVISORY COMMITTEE & PLAN OF WORK
The Advisory Committee for a Master of Science in Zoology degree
consists of a major advisor and at least two other Graduate faculty
members, one of whom must be from a different curriculum. The
membership of the committee can be altered if the student's research
direction changes. This advisory committee must be appointed
by the completion of the student's second semester.
The Advisory Committee and the student develop a specific Plan
of Work, which must be submitted by the end of the second semester.
A Plan of Work for a Master of Zoology
degree must consist of a minimum of 30 hours to include the
following:
- 20 of the 30 hours must be regular 500-800 level courses
- 6 hours of research credit (ZO695) are to be included in
the 30 hour limit
- Up to 6 hours of temporary courses (ZO624, 824) can be included
in the 30 hour total
- No more than one 400 level course may be included and that
may not be a ZO course
- A minor is optional: if one is included, at least 9 credit
hours of the Plan of Work are to be taken to meet a specific
or interdisciplinary minor. The interdisciplinary minor
includes at least three courses from outside the student's
major department or program and courses from two or more areas. One
committee member must represent the minor area.
Master of Science in Zoology students are required to present
a seminar summarizing their research in conjunction with the
final exam. The seminar will be open to all faculty, graduate
students, and guests.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
While teaching experience for graduate students
at the Master of Science level is considered valuable and is
encouraged, any requirement for teaching experience is at the
discretion of the advisory committee.
Each student is expected to carry the research results to publication, both
in scientific literature and in popular outlets.
