DOCTORAL DEGREE PROGRAM
ADVISORY COMMITTEE & PLAN OF WORK
The Advisory Committee consists of the major advisor and at
least three other Graduate Faculty members, one of whom must
represent another department (and may serve as the minor representative
if a minor is included on the Plan of Work). Appointment
of the committee must be completed before the end of the second
semester. This committee, in consultation with the student, prepares
a Plan of Work. The Plan of Graduate Work should be completed prior
to the end of the third semester of residence.
When a Plan of Graduate
Work is filed, the Graduate School will appoint a Graduate
School Representative for Doctoral candidates. It is the student's
responsibility to contact the Graduate School Representative
assigned when scheduling the preliminary and
final exams.
A minimum of 72 credit hours is required to receive
a doctoral degree. For a student who has a master's degree
from a university other than NC State, a maximum of 18 hours
of relevant graduate credit from the master's degree may be applied
toward this minimum. If a student completes a master's degree
at NC State and continues for a doctoral degree without a break
in time, up to 36 credit hours of required course work taken
while in master's status may be used to meet minimum requirements
for the doctoral degree. Doctoral students must have a
minimum of 10 hours of research credit (ZO 893 - ZO 895).
A minor is optional;
and requires 9-10 hours of the total in the minor, whether in a specific field or interdisciplinary. The
interdisciplinary minor includes at least three courses from
outside the student's major department or program and courses
from two or more areas. One of the committee members must
represent the minor field.
At least one semester of teaching experience
is required.
