Extension

The Zoology Department’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Extension activities are fundamentally different from the majority of traditional extension programs. Fisheries Extension Specialists have more direct contact and interaction with state agencies such as the NC Division of Marine Fisheries and NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The Aquaculture Specialists work at the state and national levels with government agencies (NC Division of Water Quality, NC Marine Resources Commission, NC Department of Agriculture, EPA, and USDA), and directly with Area Aquaculture Agents and private producers.

Fisheries
Extension efforts are focused on meeting the needs of four primary client groups: county extension agents and natural resource agency personnel, pond owners and the general public, school teachers, and youth (4-H and K-12). We educate county agents, agency personnel and pond owners on fisheries and aquatic issues: seminars and field days, direct technical assistance to individuals, and dissemination of information through basic training, concise educational materials (booklets and videos) and a comprehensive website (www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/wild/fisheries).

Applied research on reservoir (Dr. Jim Rice) and marine fisheries management provides (Dr. Jeff Buckel) specialized assistance to NC Wildlife Resources Commission and NC Division of Marine Fisheries Biologists and NC Sea Grant agents on management issues via frequent collaborative interactions and service on various regional and state advisory committees.

Aquaculture
Program activities in aquaculture are more specialized and deal with echnically advanced topics such as broodstock domestication and selection, sex manipulation, fish health, triploid production, effluent management, recirculating systems, and new culture species.

Extension efforts enhance efficiency, profitability, and sustainability in warmwater (Dr. Harry Daniels, Zoology Extension Director), coolwater and coldwater aquaculture and fisheries (Dr. Jeff Hinshaw), to enable expansion within the existing industry, and with new species development. Primary client groups consist of area specialized aquaculture extension agents and county agents, state and federal agencies dealing with agriculture and natural resources, private producers and producer organizations, and other individuals with an interest in aquaculture and fisheries. Specialists in the mountains and the coastal plain maintain and operate laboratories capable of assisting with water quality and fish health issues. Both locations have facilities for conducting applied research and demonstration projects.

Education efforts include conducting workshops, field days, seminars and other training for the benefit of the area extension agents and producers, as well as organizing sessions on aquaculture-related topics at state and national conferences. Active applied research programs enhance these efforts. Specialists have served in leadership roles (board member, secretary-treasurer, vice-president, president, chairman of the board, and assorted committee chairs) in national and international professional and producer organizations.
