Reaching Incoming Students Enrichment

A Research Experience for Incoming NC State University Freshman

June 23 - August 1, 2008 (Application Deadline April 4, 2008)

The RISE Program provides an introduction to scientific research for 8 incoming NC State freshmen. This six-week summer program is open to students who plan to major in science, science education, math, or engineering.
RISE participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an incoming freshman at NC State University
  • Have an outstanding academic transcript with demonstrated abilities and interest in science and math
  • Plan on a career in science, math, engineering, or science education

The program provides an introduction to scientific research at the University level. Students experience science as an exciting participatory subject and create interest in the life, physical, and medical sciences as a profession. Students receive training in laboratory safety and scientific research to better prepare them for working in the laboratory. They spend six weeks assisting a research scientist on the NC State Campus the summer prior to entering NC State in the physical or life sciences and developing a research topic. Students are matched as closely as possible to their major for the research experience. University and local scientists give weekly seminars on current research. At the end of the program, students present their research experience at the campus wide Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Selection criteria will include academic performance, personal recommendations, interest in a scientific or medical career, and demonstrated leadership ability, and creativity.
