The Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology offers a broad education that concentrates on the animal side of biology.  Our overall philosophy in designing the curriculum is that:
  • Students should be broadly educated in the liberal arts tradition, with exposure to humanities and social sciences, supporting sciences such as chemistry and physics, and the flexibility to pursue minors or other studies in such areas
  • Students should acquire a broad knowledge of zoology from the organizational level of molecules and cells to the organizational level of ecosystems, but with flexibility to then specialize or remain generalized, according to individual interests and goals
  • Students should improve their communication skills with special emphasis on writing and speaking

Our curriculum reflects those views. Required courses are designed to develop breadth and depth in core areas. In particular, students take four core courses in Zoology (ZO 150, 160, 250, 260), each with laboratory components, that contain what we judge to be essential information for providing a strong and broad base for all Zoology majors. Students are then “cut free” to develop their own specialties, in consultation with their academic advisors, by completing 16 credit hours of upper-level electives in Zoology. Development of writing and speaking skills are emphasized at several points in the curriculum.
